Open Houses

We have two Open Houses during the year, one in the fall and one in the spring, for families interested in finding out more about Acton Academy.

The deadline for applications for the fall of 2012 is April 6, 2012. Class size is very limited.

Acton Academy is located at 1404 East Riverside Drive, Austin, TX 78741, in the heart of central Austin.

Calendar:
Acton Academy is committed to creating a peaceful learning environment. We will be following an 11-month trimester calendar that allows for our students to have extended rests throughout the year and maintains their interests and retention by shortening the summer break.

Hours:
Arrival: 8:00-8:30am
Classes start promptly at 8:30am
School concludes at 3:15pm

Tuition:
Tuition is $865 per month for 11 months.
There is a $1,000.00 deposit required upon acceptance.
Tuition is adjusted annually for inflation.

Family Application Process for the Acton Academy

We are delighted that you are interested in the Acton Academy. This process is designed to make sure that we are the right school to serve the life- long learning needs for your child and your family.

In the interests of fairness for everyone involved, we ask that you follow the steps below:

Step One: Before Contacting the School for an Interview or Visit

  1. Thoroughly review the Acton Academy Website.
  2. Send a letter that addresses the following:
    1. What do you see as the role of a teacher in a child’s education?
    2. How have you been satisfied and dissatisfied with your child’s education so far? (Please be as specific as possible.)
    3. Do you believe that with all her flaws, America remains the last, best hope for mankind? Why or why not?
    4. From what book or activity have you and your spouse (each separately) learned the most in the last six month?
    5. Do you know someone who is familiar with the Acton Academy? What attracted you the most to our school?
    6. Please provide you child’s name and age, the name of your child’s last two teachers and school(s) as well as permission to contact them.

Step Two: A visit and Interview.

You and your child will be invited to school for interviews and to observe class.

Please bring with you a mini-portfolio with a sample of writing, some recent work in math and a project or assignment that the child is proud of and a mini-resume with extracurricular activities that the child enjoys.

Step Three: The Application.

  1. Read one of the following books: Unschooling Rules by Clark Aldrich; A Thomas Jefferson Education: Teaching a Generation of Leaders for the Twenty-First Century by Oliver DeMille; Your Child's Strengths: Discover Them, Develop Them, Use Them by Jennifer Fox or the Talent Code by Daniel Coyle and comment on what you did and didn't like about the book.
  2. Complete the application form and the parent contract.
